RACE COURSE:

A snow berm trail is made 4th down the center of the street until Cordova.  Race trail officials will travel the length of the course in front of the first sled dog team to ensure moose are off the trail and safety of the course.  Musher’s are released from the Start every 2 minutes after the beginning of the race.  At Cordova Street, the race then turns South going past 9th Avenue and then down to 15th Avenue.  At 15th Avenue the race goes down the hill to the Sullivan Arena area and then crosses over onto the Chester Creek trail where it goes under the SEWARD Highway coming up again at the corner of 20th and Ingra Street.

At this location, the race continues on the Chester Creek trail traveling east until the trail comes out at Lake Otis Blvd. The race stays off the road on a trail to Goose Lake on the UAA Campus.  Here the race becomes more of a trail route going out towards Tudor Road where it crosses over the road.  The race then continues out towards Tosier track and Campbell Airstrip out the base of the Chugach where the trail then turns around and heads back towards downtown.

COMMUNICATIONS RESPONSIBILITIES:

Relay musher bib numbers as they pass your checkpoint to Net Control so that the downtown ham operator can document the musher location downtown at the Race Headquarters for the race director.

Several public streets on the race course remain open to thru traffic when mushers are not in the vicinity or approaching: (15th Avenue, 9th Avenue, Tudor etc).  Ham operators are there to relay to law enforcement and race officials when the next musher is approaching your checkpoint so that traffic can be stopped at some of those key intersections.

Relay moose traffic or other potential dangers as reported on the trail by mushers to the race officials so they can mention it to the other mushers on the course as they go through each checkpoint.

Relay Emergency and Priority Traffic as needed to ensure a safe event for all participants and spectators.

Document the time and bib number through your checkpoint on the attached worksheet.

Race Starts: 1200 Noon; Ends when all mushers are off the trail; generally about 1600.

Open net: stations can call other checkpoints direct without going through net control

HAVE FUN and THANK YOU FOR VOLUNTEERING!
